Well the major airlines are making drastic measures. United started with cutbacks to its fleet and personnel, and yesterday it was Continental. They announced taking 67 inefficient airplanes out of service with layoffs for 3000 employees. Continental said they will be paying over $2 billion more for fuel this year if they don't cut back capacity. I think you will be seeing more airline announcements in the days and weeks ahead.
We as travellers are seeing ticket prices double or even trip along some routes. This is not likely to improve over the next few months. Whenever you have plans to fly you should go ahead and lock in your airfare as soon as your dates are firm. Waiting until the last minute will be a pricey mistake.
